Asphalt Calculator is an independent educational site for homeowners, property managers, estimators, and anyone preparing a paving conversation. We do not sell asphalt, dispatch trucks, or accept payment for contractor rankings.
01 · Quantity
We multiply area by compacted thickness and density, then convert pounds to U.S. tons. Default densities are 145 lb/ft³ for hot mix, 143 for warm mix, and 135 for porous asphalt. Waste and compaction allowances are transparent multipliers.
02 · Cost
State ranges are editorial estimates for common asphalt material in 2026. They are deliberately broad and are not live feeds. Plant, mix, order size, haul, market, and taxes affect actual prices. Installed work includes many costs our material result excludes.
03 · Judgment
A calculator cannot inspect soil, water, existing pavement, access, traffic, or specifications. Thickness guidance is a starting point only. Local authorities, qualified contractors, and engineers should settle final design and permitting.
Editorial standard
We label the year and the kind of cost being shown. We avoid presenting state averages as bids, separate asphalt material from installed construction, and explain why a local result can differ. Our calculation code is deterministic: the same inputs always return the same result.
We favor compacted dimensions because that is the finished pavement owners are buying. We explain density, allowances, and coverage so estimates can be checked by hand. When an assumption conflicts with a project specification or supplier data, the project-specific value wins.
